New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
